My Ancestors Came to America from Switzerland around the Horn, How do I find information about this?

They left from La Havre, France about 1884 and arrived possibly in San Francisco, Ca. They came from Canton Uri Wassen Maien in Switzerland of German-Swiss decent. We need help in trying to find passenger lists, ships etc.

Unfortantly you will need to pay for these services and records, thats the great drawback about Ancestry.com

I think your best bet will not be on the internet but having to do the footwork to locate these records. You should also try your local library genealogical room or your local Genealogy Society for Ship passenger lists and also your nearest LDS family History center Unfortantly I don't have much knowledge on immigration in the 1800's but there is someone here who can point you in the right direction, good luck in your search.
Reply:You might want to look up some of Ted Pack's answer's here in genealogy he post's a lot of helpful info.
Reply:Contact Info@LegacyFamilyTree.com and ask them how you could go about finding your roots!

Good luck

Reply:Go to swissroots.org, there is so much information on how to trace your family's roots. Make a contact and give them your information, and they can put you in contact with a geneologist over there that will do your research for you (it can get quite expensive though). Good luck!
Reply:Hmmm. Kanton Uri residents usually left from Trieste or Rotterdam, sometimes even Hamburg. It was odd for them to cross all the way over the mountains and travel through all of France to go to Le Havre. It's even more unusual that they would have left LeHavre for the US via the Indian and Pacific oceans. Since you don't have passenger lists, I would look very carefully at all the possible alternatives first. The story is, well...fishy. It's so expensive of an alternative that I think there's more to the story.

Alternative theories: Maybe they left from Rotterdam and ended up in South Africa for a while. There was a huge exodus there in the mid-1800s. There may have been a sailor or two in the group who got off in San Francisco and decided enough sailing, I'm staying put. They may have actually sailed to New Orleans and taken a train westward. They may have been one of the thousands who tried Mexico and Central America first and couldn't handle the heat, so they took a train and a ship and ended up in San Francisco.

If you have their names and approximate dates of birth, I'd be glad to help you snoop around. But I'd do it from the records and with no suppositions in mind. After 28 years, many of them doing Swiss research, I have a good idea where to look. Now it's just a matter of finding their actual records.
