I saw a painting of Moses with yellow horns, instead of a halo, inside a catholic church. whats that about?

According to the Old Testament, Moses had rays of light coming out of his head when he descended from Mount Sinai. The Hebrew word 'qaran' is derived from the word for 'horn,' and means 'to emit' or 'to grow.' Sometimes the context indicates 'to grow horns,' as when it is talking about an Ox. In the context of Moses, it meant 'to emit rays (of light).' When Jerome was translating the Vulgate, he was striving for a literal reading, so he translated the passage to say that Moses had horns coming out of his head. In Medieval iconography, it was popular to depict Moses with horns based on Jerome's description.

It had nothing to with the occult - when Medieval iconographers added horns to Moses, there was no occult meaning to the symbolism. The occult meaning did not come around until centuries later, mostly through the work of Elphias Levi in the 19th century. It also had nothing to do with Jews having horns. It was simply a literal representation of the Vulgate description of Moses. The practice of depicting Moses with horns continued long after the translation was correctly understood. Michelangelo even added horns to his statue of Moses.

Reply:Catholics spread a superstitious anti-semitic myth that Jews had horns under their head-coverings.

The story began when a mistranslation of the description of Moses (with radiant beams coming from his face) was sculpted by Michaelangelo, leading to a what appeared to be horned protrusions.

This original innocent mistake became a springboard for terrible depictions of Jews as fanged monsters with horns that snatched gentile children off the streets and ate them.
