Can anyone tell me the best way to go about burning the goat horns?(take to a vet,do it yourself,etc...)

I have a 5 month old billy goat. He had his horned cauterized by the vet because he was to old to have them burned off. Occasionally little bits and pieces will grow back. They eventually get loose and fall off on their own. This will happened throughout his life the vet told me whether they are burnt or cut off. It's nothing to be concerned with if unless they are actually getting big and regrowing. I agree that you should call a vet because this is nothing to do on your own if your not experienced. Horns should be burnt off by 10 days old or sooner. Any older and they need to be cut off and cauterized.Horns on any goat can be a problem. If you have more than one they can hurt each other and horns can to serious damage to buildings, fences, etc.
Reply:I would recommend that you have a vet consult you on this, especially to prevent with infection.
Reply:Once the goat is more then a few weeks old, it is best to have a vet take care of it. Horns have a lot of blood vessels and excessive bleeding can become a problem. Since you have waited this long, wait until late fall when a chance of infection caused by flies won't be a concern.
Reply:yeah, DEFINETLY call your vet or an area goat breeder/raiser who is very experienced. you don't want to mess your goat up or hurt them badly. i do know that debudding is generally done at birth, or a young age anyway. pygmy goats do not need their horns removed, but dairy goats definetly should.
