It's not a gypsy or tent caterpillar I hope. They cause a lot of havoc!

Unfortunately, the field guide I have doesn't show the larva for too many of the butterflies or moths. However, the one you are describing sounds somewhat similar to the larva of the Hawk Moth.

**Edit: Ok, I did a little more checking and it sounds like what you saw might be the larva for the White Lined Sphinx Moth. Check this link and see.

Reply:It sounds like a tomato hornworm. They will make holes in your tomatoes.
Reply:With your description. Parsleyworm becomes Swallowtail (pretty butterfly) :)
Reply:It is either a Tobacco Horn Worm, larva of the Hawk moth or a Tomato Horn Worm, larva of the Sphinx moth. They are both very destructive, eating leaves, stems and sometimes even the fruit of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant or at occasionally potatoes.
