I've started to do some trail riding, I've gotten tired of the show ring, and was wondering what are the good points and bad points of saddle bags, horn bags or a cantle bags. Which do you prefer and why? I know my 5yr old TWH mare doesn't care what's on her. I use a western or endurance style saddles and normally ride anywhere from 3-8 hrs.
Which do you prefer for trail riding, saddle bags, horn bags or a cantle bag?
I like the horn bags because they are small and I can keep things up close to me like my cell phone or my 32 depending on where I am riding. For a cantel bag I use one of the small soft side coolers that will fit about a 6 pack of soda. It hold food and drinks and it's compact.
Reply:I have small saddle bags. You can buy ones that keep drinks cold, but it also will hold my sunscreen, some crackers, water and a few other little things I might need on the trail.
Reply:Well I use all 3 of them. I really like the horn bags to put the bare nestities in your drinks, snacks, etc. They say that you really shouldnt put heavy saddle bags on your horses b/c where they sit it is right on the horses kidneys which isnt good for them.
Reply:I use all 3, but it depends on the ride I'm going to do. I ride more in my bareback pad %26amp; it has saddle bags sewn on. It is great!!!! I love it!! But in a saddle then the horn bag, for a little longer the saddle bags(with the horn bag), then a good ride all 3. I like to take something to eat, I have to eat about every 4 hours. So I use my saddle bags on the saddle or pad!! LOL Hope this helps!!
Reply:Cantle bag and horn bag for day rides. Big saddlebags for overnighters or longer.
Reply:i just use a string and tie 2 watter bottles to my saddle horn. That will last me all afternoon.
Reply:Saddle bags first...
Matter of fact, they stay attached to my saddle. Besides my 'emergency' supplies...like small first aid kit, toilet paper [don't laugh!], hay bale twine for emergency repairs...I can carry a gallon of water on each side [if I wanted to]...plus any food. Mine are large and have 3 pockets for each. The main bag...and two outside ones. Those work great for holding water bottles. There is alot of room, and I can carry supplies for another person easily. I do long trailrides so I'd rather have my supplies...and not need them...than NOT have them...and wish I did. Mine attach to my saddle strings, or I can buckle them to the saddle. I use both...keeps the bags right where they belong.
I also use the horn bags...keeps chapstick, extra ammo, immediate snacks, and other little things right where I can grab them...without turning around and digging through the bags.
I like them both.
Reply:I just have a bottle holder that clips onto the saddle, we have never needed anything else.
Reply:i prefer the Cantle no bounce saddle bags. they stil hold a lot but dont bounce and even on a TWH the bags still bounce when the horse is moving
