Please tell me why was the automobile horn created?

For what purpose should an automobile horn be honked? Is it dangerous to honk meaninglessly?

Please tell me why was the automobile horn created?
Umm, it's meant as a warning...Like get out of the way. It's a safety thing. However nowadays, as we all know it really means something else when you honk at people. It could be dangerous to honk meaninglessly. You could startle someone and cause them to swerve. Or you could anger someone and cause them to try to run you off the road, which has happened to me. Be careful who you anger these days.
Reply:That's true...but the early horns were poorly engineered. They were squeeze bulb types outside on the side of the hood, so when they went to use it......they leaned out the window to squeeze and got decapitated anyway.
Reply:To let someone know if they are in a dangerous way. Example.........if they are about to back into something, ect. A warning to let them know.
Reply:too many decapitations from people leaning their head out the window to yell **** You, Idiot! Horns are less dangerous than all those headless drivers...
Reply:Ha! I had to research this answer once in school... but that was so long ago that it must have been shortly after the horn was invented. Actually, the real scoop is that Autos had to be equipped with a horn to warn people of their approach. Original laws that I could find ( mainly from eastern states), stated things such as horns will be sounded before driving into the city center to warn pedestrians and equestrians. All in all, the horn is to be used as a warning device, such as blowing when going around blind curves, before entering or exiting a garage or tunnel, etc. Yes, it can be dangerous to blow it meaninglessly, but to some the horn is the audio equivalent to the finger, which to them is not meaningless.
Reply:There are many reasons it can be honked, and sometimes it's dangerous, sometimes not. It was invented so I could communicate with the @#$%^ %26amp;^*%26amp;^, @@#$%, **%26amp;^% @#$%^, %26amp;*+%$ #$$^ in front of me without having to unlock my doors or roll down my windows. It was also invented to replace the human voice in Mexico. They only communicate down there with cucaracha horns and whistles. You see, south of the border, it's a dating ritual. Many of the women there respond favorably to the sound of the human whistle, and once you get her attention by whistling at her, you pull up in front of her house and lay on that musical horn and she comes right out. No words need be spoken.
Reply:To scare the horses.
