I am looking for information on what notes tend to be flat or sharp or just out of tune on a double French horn.
What are the intonation tendencies on the French Horn?
ok, well yea the Bb horn is sharp in the low register but that is why u play the low register on F horn and G# in staff and up on Bb horn
the Bb tends to be sharp in general, but try tuning 3rd space C on the Bb horn to the same note on the F horn to get the 2 horns in tune with each other
if u have ur valve slides perfectly adjusted to give u 2,1,3 semitones down respectively then any notes requiring more than one valve will be sharp, alternatively if u have ur valves perfectly tuned for combination figurings ur single figurings will be flat
as for individual notes that depends a lot on the horn/mouthpiece/player all i can say here is start on a low F and play each note isolated chromatically up and figure out what ur personal tendencies are (use ur ear/piano/tuner)
Philip Farkas has a very detailed tuning sequence in his book The art of French Horn playing i would suggest buying this book not just for tuning but everything in it
Reply:This site might help you out.
Reply:Notes below G in the staff on the Bb side tend to have problems, avoid the Bb side on the lower notes. The F side should be ok except in the higher ranges... really that is due more to people not being use to the higher F range, the best answer is do some research on the overtone series and note which series you are using and the tendencies of the higher range.
