the main adavantage is sensitivity.
the main disadvantage is too much in the presence region. (very upper midrange and lower treble). the majority of people will get listening fatigue from this. i urge you not to buy horn speakers for home use. keep in mind, if a speaker jumps out at you with a little extra excitement in the store, it's probably not going to be much fun in the long run. if you have a paradigm dealer near you, please give them a listen. very good for the long haul.
What are the advantages and disadvantagss of horn speakers that are for home use?
glad i helped. if you don't like the 201's you wouldn't like a horn for sure! even worse. i find most speakers have that problem these days, and i believe it to be because it adds impact to home theater. but kinda bites for music. Report It
Reply:The main advantage of horn speakers is their sensitivity: they put out a lot of sound for a given power input. That is why you see outdoor PA systems use horn speakers. For home use, speaker sensitivity is no longer a big issue since high-powered amplifiers are readily available. In fact, the trend has been to sacrifice efficiency for smoother sound (a concept first introduced by the AR company in the late 50's). The big problem with horn speakers is a tendency for them to have resonances that cause uneven frequency response (this is especially true of midrange speakers and tweeters). Sensitivity is more valued for low-frequency sounds, and "corner horn" speakers were introduced by Klipsch and ElectroVoice; the "horn" is folded internally and uses the corner of the room as an extension of the horn. These speakers tended to be quite large, but had a good sound. Horn speakers are not common anymore for home hi-fi applications.
Reply:Advantages - They are usually have lower distortion and higher volumes, and also get louder than regular dynamic driven speakers given the same amount of power. Dynamics are also usually increased.
Disadvantages - Some designs can get fatiguing to the ear over a period of time due to their piercing high frequencies.
