How much time should be devoted to practicing the French Horn?

If you want to sound good in a university or professional orchestra? I am a high school senior. I don't have much time to practice and only get about an hour a day, sometimes less.

How much time should be devoted to practicing the French Horn?
The best thing to do now is to look at how you're practicing more so than how long you're practicing. Since you get an hour a day (I imagine that's an hour on your whole)- you can spend the other part of the day thinking about what your goals are going to be that night when you practice. Think of about 3 things that you want to improve, and in your practice session- aim for those. Like most brass instruments, french horns are limited by their embouchures- so its important to spend your lips like they were money, and spend them on what you need the most. I think as a high school student, an hour each day of focused playing on your own is fine for someone wanting to pursue the instrument in college- but the deciding factor will how you'll practice during these sessions.
Reply:I'd recommend 1-2 hours, for working on going to college. 2-3 is probably closer for pros, depending on ability, and I've considered that it would probably take me 6-8 hours of practice a day to get to the level where I could audition for a pro symphony orchestra. (I'm a clarinetist, BTW, with a Master's degree. YMMV, though!)

Good luck!
Reply:I would for high school, half hour to an hour a day sounds good. make sure u do warm ups(think scales) and then practice your music. good luck
Reply:If your a beginner, 30 minutes

If a 2nd year and above, 15-20 minutes
Reply:i play an hour or until my lips give out or sometimes i will play a half an hour here and a half an hour there so sometimes it depends on your skill level and how strong your lip muscles are
Reply:Philip Farkas recommended 3 hours a day split up into 2 or 3 sessions so as not to destroy your lip. I usually get 1 - 1 and 1/2 hours a day, usually 2 on weekends. But what is practice is just as important, cause its worthless if u only practice the stuff you can already play perfectly, focus on what you have trouble with and then if you have time quickly go over what you can already play, just to keep it in your head
Reply:While 1-3 hours a day is ideal for college auditions, you obviously can't get in that amount of time. It is not always the hours that matter, but how you practice and how much is put in. And probably as a french horn player you don't want to play for 2 hours straight anyways. What might help is breaking it into increments, half hour or 45 minutes. Try to get a lot more in on the weekends though, that can really help.
Reply:I would say on a good day you should practice at least 2 hours. if you are a beginner, stick with 1 hour.
