I'm in my second year of playing. I'm looking for something challenging but not too hard. I have until March 07 to practice. Please see if u can find something without a piano part.
Does anyone know of any good solos for the French horn?
Look in your local music store for any book of French horn solos that's labeled either easy or medium-level. Go through it until you find a song that you like and that is a little harder than what you can play right now. Since you have a few months to practice, you want something that's going to challenge you a little bit. You'll also have all the other songs for practicing on also.
If you have a good range (at least up to high F), you might want to check out the Mozart horn concertos. Some of the movements aren't extremely difficult and can be played without piano accompaniment if you get rid of the long rests. "Cor Royale" is another nice one if you have a good range. I think that one goes up to a high G, so it might be one to wait on until next year.
I've played French horn for 16 years and love it. It's not the easiest instrument out there, but stick with it!
Reply:Don't know of anything without piano. But everyone has to study the 4 Mozart horn concertos. The last movement of each are really fun to play.
Then there are two Haydn Horn Concertos.
Ask your music director about a list that should be sent to him for contests. This list will give you many choices.
There's the Telemann Menuett that would be good for you. It's a short piece. Highest note is a D fourth line, lowest C one line below the staff. It's only one page long with repeat.
Look at abebooks.com and write in french horn. It will list music available there and it is very cheap. Postage is more expensive.
Good luck!
Nancy
Reply:No, I don't actually.
Perhaps you can let us all know if you find one?
Reply:Inna Godda Davida for the French Horn, By Iron Butterfly would be my choice.
I'm just kidding. Don't get mad.
Good luck with all your pursuits.
(But it would be kind of cool to hear the 17 minute french horn and drum solos)
