Applying to a medical school
How do you blow your own horn in a university interview without sounding arrogant?
It might be better if all the "horn blowing" is printed on your resume/application/vita that you hand to them, rather than coming out of your mouth during an interview.
If you've made it this far you're pretty bright. The interview is to make sure you're a good human being, so relax and be yourself. And good luck!
Reply:I use the phrase 'I have been told by my former boss/ teacher/ whoever or during appraisal that xxx is one of my key strengths'. And then you can say 'i had to learn it the hard way, though, by - then give an example of how you learned your strength the hard way! It also demostrates that you can learn from your mistakes.
Reply:I think "arrogance" is a basic requirement for becoming a doctor. That, along with bad handwriting, is a prereq, especially for surgical specialties, neurology and cardiology.
Just put your "stuff" on the table. Be sure to add that while you DO walk on water, you'd be open to shuffling in some other body of water.
Reply:Talk about your strengths. These are needed for getting ahead. Talk about your accomplishments. These are okay to discuss in an interview.
Reply:never blow yourself
